Week 2 How to Become Good

Q “Virtues, by contrast, we acquire, just as we acquire crafts by first having activated them…. [W]e become builders, for instance by building, as we become harpists by playing the harp. Similarly, then, we become just by doing just actions, brave by doing brave actions” (Aristotle, II.1, p. 21). How have you become a good person? (Consider such matters as effort, self-reflection, role models, parents and teachers.) Give some examples, and relate these examples to passages in the Aristotle reading.

I have become a good person by learning from my mistakes after doing bad. According to Aristotle, the ends are most important for an action to be judged as ethical and moral. I have made decisions in my life like choosing to be honest and speaking for myself or my friend/family member rather than being dishonest and not protesting against something morally and ethically wrong. I have been able to do this because of my straightforward, brave and upfront/blunt/bold nature. The consequences of my courageous effort to support the deserving individual/individuals have mostly been positive.
